Flats Fishing

This program is a National Flats Fishing Guides Certification training that meets the Ministry of Tourism, Investments and Aviation and the Ministry of Agriculture, Marine Resources and Family Island Affairs requirements to obtain a fly fishing guide license

 

It is designed to train participants to become flats fishing guides and prepare them for sustainable work within the industry. Participants will have both virtual theoretical and in-person practical application. For the more experienced guides their knowledge of the marine environment, business and marketing will be broadened. The program has a strong science component where students gain an understanding of fish biology and behavior and marine environment and conservation.

Within the program, students have the opportunity to sharpen their skills and obtain additional certifications such as: Bahama Host, Captain's License- Class "B" and STCW Training. 

Depending on your skill level and experience within the industry, additional training will be required and offered through a mandatory internship period.

VIRTUAL THEORY CLASS SESSIONS will run for one month starting January 2023.

IN-PERSON PRACTICAL TRAINING will be conducted on the BAMSI North Andros Campus and environs for one month starting February 2023.  Health and Safety Protocols will be strictly enforced.

  • MASTER'S LICENSE - B CLASS
  • Standard of Training, Certification and Watchkeepers for Seafarers (STCW) Certification

PROGRAM SUMMARY:

  • There are 13 skills and proficiency-based modules for this program
  • One month online Theory: Starts January 2023           
  • One Month In-person Practical: Starts February 2023                                         
  • One year Internship(for those who are new to the field and will require additional real time industry experience and training.)

Internship students will be under the supervision of an experienced, qualified guide on their island. 

 

PRICE $3600

This price is non refundable, non transferable and includes tuition, course materials and the following fees:

administrative, practical, field trips, technology, library, academic resources, internship placement, external testing and license applications and fees.

The Flats Fishing Youth Launch Scholarship

The Flats Fishing Youth Launch Scholarship is an exciting new program designed to empower and enable eligible youth to achieve their passion and purpose within the industry.

AWARD AMOUNTS

The scholarship will fund eight (8) students in the amount of three thousand dollars ($3,000) each, as a one-time contribution to their success in the Flats Fishing Guide Training program

Eligibility:

Applicants must be:

A Bahamian citizen

Between the ages of 18 to 25 years

Enrolled in the Flats Fishing Program

in financial need and express a keen interest in the discipline

Application Deadline

Deadline for Applications for the 2023 scholarship cycle will be December 12th 2022 at 12 noon.  Recipients will be notified by December 15th 2022.

Funding Guidelines

Funds are applied directly to the recipient’s BAMSI student account to help defray program cost. Funds are not sent to student’s personal bank account.

FEE REFUND POLICY:
Refund of fees will be made as outlined in the table below upon official withdrawal of a student from a programme of study at BAMSI, or the dropping of courses in the non-subsidized programme, or under other applicable circumstances:

  • To be official, withdrawal or dropping of courses must be in writing and submitted to the Registrar.
  • The date on which the withdrawal request is received by the Registrar will be used for computing any refund.
  • ‘Days of classes’ are days on which classes are scheduled.
  • No refunds of registration, administration and other fees expressly stated as being non-refundable.
  • If you are expelled or suspended, you will not be entitled to any refund of fees.
